“Remind me again, why am I agreeing to this?” Zach Braun drained his coffee mug and rinsed it out, staring at the arrayed Harrow women, all with arms folded, all glaring at him.

“Well, dear.” Winifred smiled sweetly at the tired looking shifter. “We promised your mother we’d help, and she bargained a favor for our help. We can’t break a spit promise. Imagine the repercussions.” Winifred grabbed a salt-shaker and sprinkled a pinch over each shoulder.

Elspeth rolled her eyes. “She’s an idiot, but she’s right this time. Trust us or I’ll hex you.”

“She’s right, kid. You’re being railroaded. Take an old dog’s advice. Listen to my Witch. She knows her stuff.”

Poor Braun. He looked like he’d been run over by Lila’s bakery van. Dark circles rimmed his eyes and for the first time since she’d known him, he even sported stubble. “As much as it pains me to agree with my family, you need to stay off the cop’s radar until we can dig up solid evidence on another suspect. Mom and Buchanan are still out of town trying to dig up dirt on the Siren mafia, but they’ll contact us as soon as they’ve got something. Until then, lie low. And Harrow House is as good a place as any. Even more so since the house can defend herself.”

Generations of Harrow women had lived, loved, and spelled in the old Victorian-style house. Over the years, the house had grown a personality and soul. If Harrow House didn’t want you visiting, you stayed on the porch. If the house needed to contain someone inside, it moved walls around to trap you. And in Braun’s case, the house could definitely hide one crotchety bear shifter.

“I’m on record, this is a bad idea. Harrow meddling never ends well.” Amelia Harrow, Elspeth’s middle daughter and Lila’s mother, crossed her arms over her non-existent chest. “Mother is mayhem incarnate, following her plan is a recipe for disaster.”

“Do-gooder,” Elspeth muttered under her breath and gave her daughter the stink eye.

“What was that, Mother?” Amelia arched an eyebrow. “Are you telling me this plan won’t end in trouble for all involved?”

“Oh, that’s definitely going to happen, sourpuss.” Colin trotted over to Amelia and lifted his back leg a few inches off the ground.

Amelia growled. “Use it and lose it, pug.”

“Everyone but my witchy goddess, Elspeth, is a killjoy.” Colin stuck his nose in the air and trotted over to the Harrow matriarch.

She clapped her hands. “It’s all decided then. Zachy boy is a treasured houseguest we’re protecting. Got it, House?”

A creak and a groan of timbers around them was the only verbal agreement the house could give. Xandie rubbed a door frame. “Thanks, House.” It didn’t hurt to have some manners when one dealt with sentient buildings.

“So, I hole up in Harrow House while you all investigate?” Braun leaned on the kitchen counter. “You and I both know you’ll end up in trouble. I should just turn myself in. Let Jasper deal with the investigation.”

“Not happening. Elspeth and Aunt Winifred are right.
